Common Questions

Service Questions

Do you rebuild both petrol and diesel engines?
Yes. GAR Automotive Engineering carries out full overhauls on both petrol and diesel engines, for private vehicles as well as commercial, industrial, agricultural, fleet and mining applications.
What machining work can you do in-house?
In-house machining includes crankshaft grinding, conrod resizing, cylinder head skimming and valve seating, and block reboring and line boring. All components are machined to exact OEM tolerances.
How do you check an engine component for cracks?
We use magnetic particle inspection and dye penetrant testing to detect cracks, plus pressure testing on cylinder heads. Every component is inspected before any rebuilding work begins, so no failed part is machined or reassembled.
Is every rebuilt engine tested before it is returned?
Yes. Reassembled engines are load tested on our in-house dynamometers, which cover 40 kW to 2100 kW, to verify torque, power and oil pressure against OEM specification before dispatch.
What are the three stages of a GAR engine rebuild?
First, strip and inspection: complete teardown with every component chemically cleaned and evaluated. Second, machine and restore: precision machining to exact OEM tolerances. Third, build and test: assembly to manufacturer specification followed by validation under load on the dyno.
